Geology in Holyhead
You may have missed our guided walk in Holyhead with Dr Rob Crossley on 1st April but you can still explore the geology and use of building stones around the town by following our online trail written by Dr John Conway.
John explores both the bedrock – the early Cambrian New Harbour greenschist, the south stack beds of the Breakwater country Park and the Hoylhead Quartzite of the Breakwater Quarries – and the various rocks used to build the harbour, the civic buildings, the breakwater and to decorate some buidlings.
The trail starts over in the Fish Dock and progresses out towards North Stack but obviously you can jump in and out wherever you like. So come and find the Cornish granite, the Irish granite, the Norwegian granite and the Anglesey limestone. Find some amazing fossils. See what weird words like ‘conchoidal’ actually mean.
